Neighborhood Watch   2016    6.5' x 126'    Digital print, tape on McMillian Fence

Neighborhood watch

The white picket fence is a symbol of Americana, the middle class, the suburbs. Making the white picket fence over 8 feet tall personifies its presence as one that is both threatening and indomitable. It forces the fence’s presence to be known, and stands as a reminder for those who have access to the campus of those they are excluding; however, by only taping the printer paper white picket fence, the once formidable image will crumble due to humidity, water exposure, touch, etc. pointing to the fallacy of the American Dream for so many and the tenuous nature of safety as a feature of in-group, out-group thinking. Funded by Art Council for the Presidential Debate at Washington University in St. Louis.
